Artist's Comments

A few days ago, I was reading a book on the last Tsar, when my dad asked me if I was still interested in Russia and the Romanovs. He then gave me this whole wade of old Russian paper money from 1905 to 1917. This one is from 1909. He told me that when he was a little boy, still in elementary school, a friend of his mothers gave him this money. This woman and her family were from Russia, and were somehow or other connected to the Tsar, but when the Bolsheviks took over and the Tsar and his family imprisoned, they were forced to leave Russia. I think these people were probably servants or something. Well, she gave him this money and he has kept it ever sense in this little beat-up suitcase, in which he keeps just about everything that means something to him. So, it was really touching for me when my dad gave me some of the money, because he obviously really cares about it, or he wouldn't have kept it this long, or put it in the Suitcase.
The money is really battered and worn, and when it was new, I expect that it was much brighter. Its very thin and delicate. This is the front and back of one bill(I was allowed to take only one).

I don't know what the money says, but its pretty. I like it plenty.

i can translate that.
national credit ticket, 5 rubels.
then it says that those tickets can be traded into gold coins in the national bank. no sum limit. then some numbers about regarding what is worth how much -too stupid for that.
the last two lines have the signatures of who is in charge and who is the cashier.
it's not even real money, haha

As the businessmen slowly get stoned
Yes, their sharing a drink they call loneliness
But its better than drinking alone

That is quite something, a wonderful thing to have.
On a random note, I saw a programme recently where a man had collected pictures of the Romanovs since he was a little boy, and he had this photo album valued... And it was worth over £35 Million.
Quite something indeed!
